Description

This is a portion of the south boundary wall with a gateway, located 20 metres south of the Church of St Lawrence, and it adjoins a whirligig. The wall dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of local stone coursed rubble with ashlar piers. The average height of the wall is about 2 metres, and it returns westward. The gate piers are approximately 500 millimetres square and made of plain ashlar, featuring slightly moulded tops. There is a plain iron rod arch linking the piers, which also serves as a lamp bracket. The heavy wrought iron gate has barbed arrowhead spikes. To the west, there is a timber whirligig with a plain post and a cruciform horizontal wheel. This structure is in a prominent position and is important for the setting of the Church of St Lawrence and Church House.
