Description
The Churchyard gates and boundary walls to the north and west of the Church of St Peter and St Paul were built in 1818. They are constructed from local stone rubble, mostly cut and squared, with ashlar piers and wrought iron gates. The northeast gateway, which is the closest to the town, is grander than the others, featuring gate piers that are about 600 millimeters square. These piers have rusticated ashlar plinths, moulded flat caps, and Adam style urns as finials. The gates are adorned with barbed spear points on their curved tops and Greek key ornamentation on the middle rails. The central piers of this gateway are approximately 3 meters high, while the outer piers stand at about 2.5 meters. The northwest gate is similar in detail but smaller in scale. The southwest gate has plain ashlar piers that are about 400 millimeters wide and 2 meters high, topped with moulded pyramidal caps. The gates here feature plain points on the rails, with a quatrefoil design in the middle rails and applied curves on the top rail. The linking walls vary in height due to the slope of the ground but average around 1.5 meters, with tops finished in cement flaunching. This structure is an essential part of the street scene around the church and dates from the extension and enclosure of the churchyard in 1818. Only the northeast gateway was previously listed.
