Description

The barn and mill at Hinton Farm, located 60 metres east of the farmhouse, dates from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond and features a hipped plain clay tile roof with base courses of stone slates. The structure has eight bays, with the two northernmost bays added in the late 19th century. There is a central projecting porch on the west side and three projecting porches on the south side. The west projection has a gabled roof, and its doorway is blocked. There are ventilation holes in the patterned brickwork on the left, while the right two bays house the old mill, which has three floors and deep cellars. These bays feature a beaded surround mullioned window with vertical iron bars, and matching architraves on the ground floor doorway. An additional doorway is located on the first floor between the windows in a stable pattern. The bays to the right have been converted into stables, with rubbed brick segmental arched openings in the south wall. Inside, collar-braced trusses support the structure. The mill retains much of its water-driven machinery, including two grinding stones, although the water wheel has been removed and is now powered by a turbine connected to a system of tunnelled streams. The earliest reference to a corn-grist mill at this site dates back to 1720.
