ILCHESTER CP CHURCH STREET (East side) The Church Hall

Former school, now church hall. 1837. Local lias, cut and squared. Ham stone dressings; Welsh slate roof to shallow pitch between coped gables, brick chimney stacks on stone base. Two storeys, single bay. Three-light hollow chamfer mullioned windows with cinquefoil cusped heads under flat arches and square labels; signs of blocked doorway to left, and above this a rectangular plaque, with no inscription discernible. Similar windows in north elevation against churchyard; the north gable has an elaborate finial. Interior not seen. Founded as the Ilchester National School in 1837, it became infants only in 1878, and was closed in 1962, when the building was sold to the Parochial Church Council. (VCH, Vol III, 1974).
