Description
The Church Hall, located on Church Street, is a former school that was built in 1837. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, with ham stone dressings and a Welsh slate roof that has a shallow pitch between coped gables. The building features brick chimney stacks set on a stone base and is two storeys high with a single bay.
The façade includes three-light hollow chamfer mullioned windows that have cinquefoil cusped heads, positioned under flat arches with square labels. There are signs of a blocked doorway to the left, and above this doorway, there is a rectangular plaque, although no inscription is visible. The north elevation, which faces the churchyard, has similar windows, and the north gable is topped with an elaborate finial. The interior has not been seen. Originally founded as the Ilchester National School in 1837, it became an infants-only school in 1878 and was closed in 1962 when the building was sold to the Parochial Church Council.
