Description
The Ilchester War Memorial is a First World War memorial dedicated to the men from Ilchester parish who lost their lives while serving their country in the First World War and subsequently in the Second World War.
The monument features a Portland stone Celtic cross set on a round pillar, which stands on a square Hamstone plinth. This plinth bears marble tablets with leaded lettering that lists the names of the sixteen men who fell in the First World War, along with the inscription:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE / OF OUR MEN / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN DEFENCE / OF THEIR KING AND COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / OF 1914-1918.
Additionally, a further marble tablet was added at the base of the monument, inscribed with the names of the five men of the parish who lost their lives while serving their country in the Second World War.
