Description
The Old School, located on Church Street, is a former National School that now serves as an assembly hall. It was built in 1846 and features ham stone ashlar construction with a Welsh slate roof, which is set between coped gables and has a parapet on the front elevation. The building is single storey and consists of five bays. It has a plinth, an eaves course, and an open quatrefoil-work parapet, along with bay buttresses that are offset at the corners.
The windows are three-light, cinquefoil cusped designs with transoms and flat arched heads, set under labels with deep drops. Most of these windows are diamond-leaded and are located in bays one, two, four, and five. Bay three is a gabled projection that features angled corner buttresses and a pointed arched doorway, which is set under a deep square label. The spandrils of the doorway are elaborately carved with foliage. There is also pierced stonework vent in the gable, topped with a pinnacle finial. Above the doorway, a square panel bears the inscription: "Glory to God in the Highest/Martock National School House/ erected by public and private contributions/AD 1846/Jesus said suffer the little children to come unto me." The interior of the building has not been seen. The Old School functioned as a school until a new school was established in 1975.
