Description
The George Inn, located on Church Street, is an inn that dates from the early 19th century but includes elements from earlier periods. It features a facade made of ham stone ashlar, with squared rubble on the other sides, and a Welsh slate roof that has stepped coped gables and brick chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high and has four bays. The sash windows, which have 16 panes, are set in plain surrounds with keystoned lintels. In the second bay from the left, there is a six-panel door in a plain surround. A fascia board runs between the floors across the first three bays, and at the upper level, between the third and fourth bays, there is a hanging sign on a wrought iron bracket.
To the north-east gable, there is a single-storey extension with a double Roman clay tiled roof that has an overhung gable. The gable wall of this extension is timber-framed with rendered panels, possibly dating from the 16th or 17th century, and there is a plain window in the south-east wall. The interior has been significantly altered, especially on the ground floor, which has also been extended at the rear. The inn was first mentioned by name in 1631 and is likely referred to in 1617.
