Description

The War Memorial and boundary wall between the south and north-east gateways of the Church of All Saints is a significant structure. The memorial, designed by Henry Wilson and carved by stone mason W Micklewright of Norton Sub Hamdon, was unveiled on 23 April 1922. The boundary wall is likely from the 19th century or earlier and features a long, curved design made of roughly squared Ham stone, with ashlar detailing at changes of direction and chamfered ashlar tops. The wall averages 1.3 meters in height but drops to 1 meter on either side of the memorial, which interrupts the wall. The wall has curved returns that extend north-westward, ending in low square piers topped with pumpkin finials that frame six curved steps.

The memorial itself stands about 4 meters high and is set on an octagonal base with quasi-buttresses at the corners. It features a tall shaft base with shouldered, semi-circular topped memorial tablets, leading to an octagonal shaft that culminates in a cross designed in a somewhat Celtic style. This memorial is an important feature in the streetscape and enhances the setting of the church.
