Description

The South Gateway and Stocks, located immediately southeast of the Church of All Saints on Church Street, date back to 1627. Constructed from ham stone, the gateway features wrought iron work and consists of a short, tall ashlar wall with stepped angled coping that returns down the sides. It is topped with three pinnacles and frames a moulded semi-circular archway that includes a false keystone and impost blocks. The approach to the gateway is via four steps, which are flanked by matching baluster walls that end in square piers with bell-hip caps. The gates, dating from the early 19th century, are adorned with Gothic arches, scrolls, barbed arrow points, and other Regency style decorations. The railings at the corners are formed by projecting stairs set on a low stone base, which is now almost sunken, and have plain arrowhead tops. On the southwest side, the railings enclose a notice board, while on the southeast side, the stocks feature four leg-holes with iron straps, covered by a roof made of wrought iron and oak planks. An inscription above the archway reads: "Robert Jeane and Thomas Row, Churchwardens, Ano Dni 1627."
