Description
Ashlar House, formerly known as The Cedars, is a semi-detached house located on the south side of Pound Lane in Martock. It dates back to the early 18th century and is constructed from ham stone ashlar with a hipped plain clay tile roof that is set behind parapets. The building features brick chimney stacks and is two storeys tall, measuring five bays by two bays.
The exterior includes a plinth, rusticated quoins, a cornice, and a low solid parapet with thin moulded coping. The windows are 12-pane sash types with thick glazing bars, framed by architraves. Notably, the lower bay three on the north face has a pair of four-panelled doors that are accessed by one step, set within an eaved architrave beneath a segmental pediment. The east elevation matches the design seen on Water Street.
Inside, the east room boasts an 18th-century fireplace and an early 20th-century bay window in the south wall. The interior also features six fielded panel doors and a fine 18th-century staircase with turned balusters and a fielded panel dado. A semi-circular arched stair window adds to the character of the space. The east bedroom includes an 18th-century fireplace, along with its original cornice and dado. The property is accompanied by boundary railings to the north and east.
