Description

Church Lodge Cottage is a semi-detached house located on Church Street, dating from the late 16th century, with remodels around 1700 and 1800. It is constructed of ham stone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof that has an abutment to the north and a coped gable to the south, along with brick chimney stacks. The building has an 'L'-plan and stands two storeys high with an attic, comprising two bays.

In the lower bay 1, there is a 9-pane sash window set in a beaded surround, while lower bay 2 features a 19th-century part-glazed door within an architrave, flanked by later plain sidelights. Above these, there are a 3-light and a 2-light hollow-chamfered mullioned window, both with unworked top mitres, positioned in recesses without labels. Centrally, there is a flat-roofed dormer window with a timber casement. The south gable displays a slightly projecting chimney stack and two matching 2-light mullioned windows, with the upper window later extended and transomed. The rear wing includes two 3-light windows and a 2-light window that match the front, with the lower 3-light window featuring a label. All windows are fitted with rectangular leaded panes.

Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to contain hollow-chamfered beams with step and run-out stops, an ogee-mould flat-arched fireplace, and a cranked collar roof truss with a mortice and tenon apex and trenched purlins. The front boundary features wrought-iron railings set on a low stone wall, extending from the north-east gateway of the churchyard. These railings have spearpoint tops and are complemented by a matching gate opposite the door, enhancing the overall setting of the house.
