Description
The Chantry, located on Church Street, is a cottage behind a shop, likely originally consisting of more than one unit. It dates from the 14th and 17th centuries and is constructed from Ham stone near-ashlar with plain clay tiled roofs featuring coped gables, and one section has stone slate base courses. The building has two storeys and a four-bay southwest elevation, where bay 1 houses the Pharmacy. The windows include hollow chamfered mullioned windows in bays 2 and 3, all of which are three-light except for the lower bay 2, which is two-light. To the left of lower bay 2 is a four-pane sash window. There is a gabled single-storey extension projecting between bays 2 and 3, which has a two-light hollow-chamfered mullioned window in the northwest wall. Upper bay 4 features an ovolo-mould mullioned window with four lights, although the center mullion has been removed. The northeast wall displays a variety of windows, including two three-light hollow chamfer windows, one in lower bay 1 in a 17th-century style, and a smaller one in upper bay 4 that may be medieval.
Inside, the property contains various historical details, such as a pointed arch doorway with Norman features dating no later than 1325, and a medieval roof frame with a cambered collar and curved braces, where the center truss has a lower kingpost. The northeast gable includes a 17th-century fireplace with a flat arch and ovolo-mould and wave-mould surround. There are also several 17th and 18th-century doors, and the staircase is likely from around 1800. This building has been identified as the residence of the chaplain of a chantry established by John de Soy in Martock Church in 1325, and it passed to Sherborne School in 1550.
