Description
Church Lodge, located on Church Street, is a semi-detached house dating from the 18th century and possibly earlier. It is constructed of ham stone ashlar and features a hipped Welsh slate roof with stone chimney stacks. The building has an 'L' plan, stands two storeys tall, and consists of three bays. It includes a plinth, end pilasters, a band, and an eaves course. The sash windows are set in architraves, with 12 panes below and 9 panes above.
The entrance is located at the rear, in the north wall of the rear wing, which may have origins from the 16th or 17th century. This wing has two bays and stone slate base courses for the roof. In the second bay, there is a 4-light leaded mullioned window with beaded surrounds above and a composite sash window below. The lower part of the first bay features a semi-circular arched doorway with a boarded door beneath a cast iron fanlight.
The interior showcases several periods, including mid-18th century white and coloured marble fireplaces with wood overmantels. The northeast room has a character mostly from around 1800, featuring a fine ceiling frieze. In the central lobby, there is a recess with shaped shelves and a triple keystoned architrave, possibly from another location, now blocking a former doorway into Church Lodge Cottage.
To the east, a small garden is enclosed by spearpoint railings set on a low stone wall, with a matching gate at the northeast corner. There are also short wing walls on either side of the house topped with bell-hip caps on blocks at the ends. The property is enhanced by a good pair of 19th-century Regency pattern gates, which have an ornamented middle rail, sweep to the tops, and feature spearpoint rails, contributing to the overall setting of the house.
