Description

Bubspool House is a house with origins in the 15th century and later work from the 16th, 17th, and 19th centuries. It is constructed from Ham stone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof with coped gables and stone end chimney stacks. The main block has a double roof plan and a south extension that is set back. The building is two storeys high with a four-bay main west facade.

In the first bay, there are a pair of 12-paned sash windows below and 6-pane windows above. The second bay features a cambered arched entrance doorway flanked by small single-light windows, above which is a 3-light hollow chamfered window without a label. The third bay has a similar window on the ground floor only. The fourth bay contains a 4-light window below and a 3-light window above, both without labels.

The set-back six-bay extension is mostly from the 19th century and includes mullioned windows in the first two bays, with sash and casement windows elsewhere. Inside, there is a 17th-century staircase in the central wing, and a former external single-cusped light window beneath a square block. There is also a mutilated 15th-century doorway on the first floor with head stops to the label, along with some panelling in the entrance hall and one room above dating from around 1600. The west half of the main block has a somewhat restored close coupled roof, while the east block is from the 19th century. The south range features a stone newel stair and part of a 15th-century roof structure, as well as a segmental arched wood lintel over the dining room fireplace and several stop-chamfered ceiling beams.
