Description
Orchard Cottage is a cottage, possibly dating back to the 15th century. It is one of a pair, originally situated immediately south of the Helyar Arms in East Coker. The cottage is built of rubble, with a brick gable and a south-facing extension. The roof is thatched, and there’s a brick chimney on the extension. It’s two storeys high and has one bay. A three-light casement window is on the ground floor, with an exposed timber lintel above it. On the first floor is a three-light casement window with diamond-leaded panes and an ovolo-mould edge. There is an entrance door in the side gable. The interior is reported to contain three jointed cruck trusses, featuring long tenons and windbracing, along with a smoke-blackened wattle and daub partition within the roof. It adjoins Holly Bark to the west, with no visible external division between the two properties.
