Description
The Green is a house located in Adderbury, likely built in the late 17th century, with remodeling in the early to mid-18th century and further alterations and extensions in the early 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared marlstone with limestone-ashlar dressings, topped with roofs of Welsh slate and Stonesfield slate, featuring ashlar gable stacks.
It has a two-unit plan with a long rear range that has been extended. The main façade is two storeys plus an attic, presenting a regular four-window arrangement. This front features a chamfered stone plinth and eaves cove, with 12-pane sash windows set in 18th-century stone architraves that include projecting double-stepped keyblocks. The doorway in the third bay has a four-panel door with matching panelled reveals, framed by an early 19th-century stone doorcase supported by Tuscan columns and topped with an entablature.
To the right, there are two later bays that are slightly set back and have a lower stone-slate roof, with matching windows. The steep-pitched Welsh-slate roof of the main range has gable parapets with projecting kneelers, and each gable features a paired stack with a linked plinth and cap. The left gable includes a leaded two-light window with a square stone mullion and moulded architrave; a matching window has been blocked due to the addition of the later bays.
The long rear wing, which extends from the left, is likely mostly early 19th century and contains additional accommodation and garaging, featuring some casements and several segmental-arched openings. The rear of the building is noted to have a stair projection. The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted to contain a late 17th-century stair.
