Description

South House, built in 1824 and altered and extended in the late 19th century, is a substantial house located on The Green in Adderbury East. The attached wall and three gatepiers date from the late 17th century. The house features marlstone ashlar and coursed squared rubble, with brick and Welsh-slate roofs, and has both three-storey and two-storey sections. The main range has a three-window ashlar front, with four-light sash windows on the ground and first floors, except for a late 19th-century tripartite sash to the left of the entrance. The second floor has shorter 12-pane sashes. A rendered and painted cornice and plain parapet conceal a shallow-pitched roof with gable parapets and ashlar stacks. The late 19th-century ashlar porch has an arched entrance and side sashes, along with a stone entablature. The hipped-roofed brick rear wing contains additional sashes. The interior has not been inspected.

To the right of the house, there is a rubble wall approximately 2 metres high, featuring a three-course triangular coping and a gateway with early 19th-century iron gates. This wall is flanked by two large square limestone-ashlar piers with chamfered plinths, cornices, and large ball finials. The wall extends about 30 metres to another gatepier, which serves as part of the entrance to The Orchard. The walls and gatepiers were originally part of the large 16th and 17th-century Mansion of the Cobb family, which was demolished in 1815. A stone inscribed with the year 1582 has been re-set in one of the gatepiers.
