Description

Two houses, possibly originally one dwelling, located on Adderbury High Street. The buildings date from the 16th century, with alterations carried out in the 17th and 18th centuries. They are constructed of coursed squared marlstone with wooden lintels, and have a concrete roof covered in plain tiles, with stone and brick stacks. The houses have a four-unit plan and are subdivided. The front elevation, which is irregular and shows evidence of early alterations, features renewed 2-light and 3-light casement windows in bays one and two (number 1), along with two entrances. Bays three and four (number 2) include 3-light 18th-century casement windows, a further entrance, and a small stair window. The steeply pitched roof has brick stacks to the right of bays two and four, and a stone-based stack to the right of bay one. The rear of the property includes a small stone window with two pointed lights, and a blocked four-centred arched doorway located opposite the middle entrance. The interior of number 1 contains a large open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer, a stop-chamfered spine beam, and is said to have a stone stair beneath the present staircase. Number 2 has heavy chamfered intersecting beams spanning onto similar perimeter beams, and also features some very heavy chamfered joists.
