Description
This is a footbridge dated 1838, located over a road in East Bagborough, Bishop's Lydeard. It is constructed from red sandstone random rubble and features a single span arch with chamfered corners on the abutments. The low parapet is adorned with cast iron railings designed with spearheads, and the parapet sweeps back to end in square red sandstone gatepiers, which are topped with two courses of brickwork and sandstone caps. At the west end, there is a simple wrought iron gate that is likely from the same period. The keystone on the south front of the bridge is inscribed with "G.I.E." (George Esdaile) and the year 1838. At the time of the survey in June 1983, the bridge was largely obscured by ivy. It originally connected Cothelstone House, which has since been demolished, and its stables to the east with the walled kitchen garden to the west.
