Description
Manor Cottages is a pair of cottages that were originally a church house, lodgings, or a detached kitchen wing. The building dates from the late 15th century and was altered in the 19th century into three cottages, then modified again in the mid-20th century into its current form. It features red sandstone random rubble masonry with coped verges and a tiled roof that has a slight overhang and coved stone soffits, with wood at the northwestern end.
The structure is two storeys high with irregularly placed windows, including some blocked openings. The left-hand cottage has two 19th-century casement windows under brick relieving arches to the left of a central blocked entrance, with a medieval stone moulded window frame and a similar blocked mullion window to the right. The right-hand cottage has a modern door in the end bay beneath a brick relieving arch, with a pair of similar 19th-century windows to the left flanking a blocked 4-centred arch opening, which also has a relieving arch. Above this are two 19th-century casement windows, and the right return elevation features 2 and 3-light hollow chamfered mullions.
Inside, there are six pairs of jointed crucks, with one partially visible in the left-hand cottage; the right-hand cottage was not viewed. The history of this late medieval building remains unclear.
