Description
The National Trust Cottages, located on Lower Eashing Lane in Shackleford, are two cottages dating from the late 16th century with alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. They are timber framed, with the left cottage featuring exposed timber, colourwashed brick rubble, and smooth render infill on sandstone rubble plinths. The right cottage is constructed from galleted, coursed sandstone with brick dressings. The cottages have a plain tiled roof that is half hipped on the right side.
They are two storeys high, with an offset end stack on the left, a ridge stack in the centre, and another end stack on the right. The left cottage has irregular leaded casement windows, with three on the first floor and four below. The right cottage has two windows on the first floor and three below, all featuring cambered head relieving arches made with gauged bricks.
There is a planked door to the left of centre on the left cottage, accessed by a flight of four sandstone steps (this is No. 2). At the junction of the two cottages, there is a blocked Tudor arched moulded door. Additionally, there is another door (No. 1) on the right-hand return front.
