Description
The gateway and flanking walls with gatepiers at Cothelstone Manor date back to the 16th century but were relocated to their current position in the mid-19th century. The facade is made of red sandstone ashlar, with a random rubble construction featuring buttresses at the rear. The central opening is a large, moulded arch with a hood mould, flanked by smaller arched openings. Above the arch, there are recumbent lions, which were imported from Tetton House in the late 19th century, set on a flat coping. The central opening is topped with pentice coping. On either side of the central opening, there are coats of arms with moulded surrounds, likely from the mid-19th century. To the right, there is a curved wall made of red sandstone random rubble, about one and a half metres high, with flat coping that terminates in a square pier with a moulded cap. The wall on the left is similar but about three metres high. Originally, this gateway stood across the road, and it is noted that two men were hung from it following the Monmouth Rebellion.
