Description
This Gothic villa, now converted into flats, dates from the mid-19th century. It is constructed from Cary stone that is cut and squared, featuring bands and dressings of grey lias and Doulting stone. The building has double Roman clay tile roofs with overhanging gables that have elaborately ornamental bargeboards, along with brick chimney stacks. The villa is two storeys high and has four bays, with the first bay being wider, slightly projecting, and gabled. It has a lias stone plinth and band course, and the windows are four-pane sash types with margins set in toothed lias stone surrounds, topped with Doulting keystoned lintels. There is a gabled light in the first bay, and to the left of this bay is a part-glazed door in a matching opening, with a similar door in the lower second bay. The interiors have not been seen.
To the east of the house, connected to the northeast corner, is a low stone wall with a rounded top course, on which are set cast-iron railings about one metre high, featuring fleur-de-lys and spearhead points. There are matching gates opposite both doorways, flanked by ashlar piers with heavily detailed pyramidal caps. The villa is situated in a prominent position at the highest point of Bailey Hill.
