Description
Messrs. Parker's shop, with house, is a building from the 18th century that was refronted in the 19th century. It is constructed from local stone rubble, rendered and color-washed on the facade, with painted stone dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate with a shallow pitch and is hipped at the east end, featuring brick chimney stacks. The building is set on a curve and has three storeys with six bays. The upper bays and the lower bay two have 4-pane sash windows in beaded surrounds, with the first-floor window in bay four being larger than the others. The lower bay one has a plain 20th-century shopfront with a door to the left, while lower bay three features a six-panel door with glazed toplights in a beaded semi-circular arched surround, topped with a radial glazed fanlight. Early 20th-century shopfronts, which have been adapted, are present in bay four and in bays five and six, both of which have central recessed doorways. The return elevation to Knights Way is not rendered but has matching openings and a doorway, with sash windows that have 12 panes and are probably late 18th century. There is an open timber lean-to covered way and porch supported by circular cast-iron columns, which are protected by railings. The interior has not been seen. The buildings are included primarily for their group and streetscape value in the heart of the town.
