Description
The George Hotel is an inn with origins dating back to the 17th century or earlier, although it has been largely modified in the 18th century and later. It is constructed from Cary stone and lias rubble, topped with a thatched roof featuring plain gables on the main block and a coped gable on the southern half. The building has two storeys, with a main block that has four bays and a slightly set-back three-bay extension, which is also from the 18th century.
The windows are primarily sash windows, mostly with 12 panes and slim concrete lintels. However, bays two and four of the main block feature flat-roofed single-storey bay windows with 4+16+4 panes, and bay six has a two-storey angled bay with 12+20+12 pane sash windows beneath a lead flat roof. The lower bay three includes a six-panelled door set in a painted ashlar surround, which is adorned with Doric pilasters, a simple entablature, and a pediment hood. Above this door hangs a projecting sign on a 19th-century wrought iron bracket with decorative scrollwork. Some windows have brick reveals, and one quoin stone on the main block displays 12th-century chevron moulding.
At the rear, there are significant extensions, including a long earlier 19th-century wing featuring four large 16-pane sash windows on the first floor and a former segmental arched throughway below, which is now blocked. The interior has been considerably altered, but several crossbeams remain visible.
