Description
White and Sons, Ironmongers, and the attached house is a building dated 1804, located in Castle Cary on Fore Street. It is constructed from cut and squared Cary stone with Doulting dressings and features a plain clay tile roof between coped gables, along with brick end chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and four bays.
The shopfront, which dates from the late 19th century, is notable for its two square shallow-projection bays, each with three-light windows, and elliptical arches above the lights. There are tall glazed doors in a central recess across the first two bays, set beneath a continuous shallow fascia with a lead flat roof. In the third bay, there is a six-panel door framed by an architrave with a pediment hood supported by console brackets. The fourth bay features a two-storey angled bay window with sash windows arranged in a 2+4+2 pane configuration, also under a lead flat roof. Above the first three bays, there are 12-pane sash windows in architraves, and between the first and second bays, there is a plaque with raised letters reading "N/AA/1804." The interior of the shop retains much of its 19th-century character, although the inside of the house has not been seen.
