Description
The Post Office, originally a house, was built in 1767 and features Cary stone ashlar with Doulting dressings. It has a Welsh slate roof with stepped coped gables and brick chimney stacks at each end. The building is two storeys tall with an attic and consists of five bays, with the central bay projecting slightly and topped with a pediment. Architectural details include a plinth, ashlar quoins, a cornice, and a plain parapet with moulded coping. The windows are 12-pane sash types set in architraves, while the central bay features a Venetian window on the first floor and a six fielded panel door below, framed by a shouldered architrave and topped with a pediment on console brackets. The interior has been adapted for use as a post office and shop on the ground floor, while the first floor has not been seen.
Three metres south of the building is a front boundary wall made of Cary stone on a lias base, constructed from coursed rubble with plain coping. This wall, which is between one and two metres high, encloses a paved forecourt and is important for the setting of the house and contributes to the streetscape of Bailey Hill.
