Description
The Round House is a lock-up built in 1779 by Mr. W. M. Clark. It is constructed from cut and squared lias stone with a domed roof made of Doulting stone. The building has a circular plan with a diameter of about 2.25 metres and sits on a slight plinth. Its design features two stepped sloping courses below a bee-hive dome, which is topped with a ball finial. Access is provided by a boarded door located on the south side, which is reached by four stone steps and framed by a plain surround. There are vents above the door and at the rear in the first roof base course. The interior has not been examined. Originally built as a 'temporary lock-up' at a cost of £23, it underwent restorations in 1894 and 1983, and was presented to the parish council in 1922, as noted by a plaque on the building.
