Description

This villa, located at 8 Newbattle Road in Dalkeith, dates from around 1870 and is two stories tall with three bays. It features stugged squared and coursed masonry with ashlar dressings and a base course, along with chamfered reveals and overhanging eaves.

The north elevation has three gabled bays, with an M-gabled design and a small valley gable at the center bay. There is a moulded shouldered doorway in the center, which includes a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. Above this is a stone balcony with a quatrefoil design, supported by large carved brackets. The first floor has a shouldered window, and the gablehead features a fleuron in a moulded panel. To the right on the ground floor, there is a corniced tripartite window set in an advanced panel, topped with a stone piended roof. The first floor has a bipartite window with a hoodmould above, which has carved label-stops and is stepped over a moulded panel containing a blank shield and foliate detail. The gablehead has a segmental-arched window. To the left, there is a full-height canted window with a steep slate roof, a banded apron at the first floor, and a sculpted fleuron in the gablehead.

The east elevation features a gable to the left, with two windows at the center on both the ground and first floors. The west elevation has a gable to the right, with a mullioned and transomed stair window at the center. There is a modern garage attached to the left and a piended service wing attached to the right.

The villa has plate glass glazing patterns in its sash and case windows, and delicate iron finials adorn the gableheads on the north side. Coped shouldered stacks with ridge tile details are present on the coping, with wallheads on the north to west and east elevations, and gableheads on the south to west and east elevations. The roof is covered with grey slates. Additionally, there is a boundary wall with pyramidal-capped chamfered square piers.
