Description

This building at 6 Newbattle Road, Dalkeith, dates from 1871 and is a two-storey, three-bay villa. The north elevation features stugged squared and coursed masonry, while the other elevations are made of squared and snecked rubble, with contrasting ashlar dressings. A base course runs along the building, and the north elevation has stop-chamfered angle margins. The porch and north elevation display curly bargeboarding, and the eaves are deep and overhanging.

On the north elevation, there is a bolection-moulded shouldered doorway at the center, which includes a recessed panelled door and a shouldered plate glass fanlight above. The steeply gabled decorative timber porch is open to the right and is set in a re-entrant angle formed with an advanced gabled bay to the left. To the left at ground level, there is a canted window with a half-piend slate roof, and above it, a bipartite window at the first floor. The gablehead features a moulded panel inscribed with "1871." In the bay to the right, there is a flat-roofed advanced panel with a tripartite window at ground level and a dormer-headed window above. A small dormer-headed window is located at the center of the first floor.

The west elevation has a two-storey advanced bay to the left with a half-piend roof, featuring windows at both ground and first floors, separated by a band course. There is also a window to the right at ground level.

On the east elevation, a modern timber open lean-to is attached to the right. To the left, there is a two-storey wing with a half-piend roof, which includes a door and window at ground level and a window at the first floor facing south.

The south elevation has a gabled two-storey jamb at the center, with a half-piend roofed oriel window at the first floor. A modern garage is attached at ground level to the south return, along with a door and window at ground level facing west. There is a door and a modern glazed lean-to on the outer right, and windows at ground level on the outer left, each with dormer-headed windows above at the first floor.

The villa features 2 and 4-pane glazing patterns in sash and case windows, and has coped shouldered stacks, with gableheads to the east and west (the west stack is rendered and lined), and a wallhead at the center to the east of the jamb. The roof is covered with grey-green slates, and the original rainwater goods are still in place.

The property is accessed via chamfered square gatepiers topped with flat-pyramidal caps.
