Description
14 Newbattle Road in Dalkeith is a villa built in 1869, featuring two storeys with a first floor that breaks the eaves, and it has three bays. The north and east elevations are constructed from stugged squared and snecked rubble, with ashlar dressings. The building has a base course, stop-chamfered margins, and chamfered cills, along with overhanging eaves and exposed rafters.
On the east elevation, which is the principal facade, there is a centrally located door with a raised surround, a panelled door, and a plate glass fanlight above. This is topped by a consoled cornice and a fluted deep blocking course that forms an apron for the first-floor window. An unusual shouldered gablehead stack with a bracketed cornice leads up to a finialed dormerhead. To the left, there is a full-height canted window in a bay that breaks the eaves in a corbelled gablehead. The roof is gabled with a common ridge line, and there are advanced panel details between the floors and in the gablehead. To the right, there is a dormerheaded full-height advanced panel in the bay, with a bipartite window at both the ground and first floors.
The north elevation, facing Newbattle Road, is also three bays wide. It has a gabled bay that is advanced to the left, featuring a full-height canted window that is corbelled at the gablehead and has a gabled roof that projects from the main roof. There are advanced panel details between the floors and a panel in the gablehead inscribed "1869." The centre bay has a narrow bipartite window at the ground level, while the right bay has a bipartite window at both the ground and first floors, with the first-floor window being dormerheaded.
The south elevation consists of three bays as well, with a gabled bay advanced to the right. It features a tripartite window at the ground level and a bipartite window at the first floor, along with a stair window at the centre. There is a modern lean-to garden shed attached to the west return at the ground level. Additionally, there is a window that is out of line to the left at the ground level in the left bay, and a dormerheaded window at the first floor.
The west elevation has a single-storey service wing attached at the ground level, with windows located at the centre and right. A former window to the north is blocked by an adjoining modern garage that is advanced to the north.
The villa features plate glass glazing patterns in its sash and case windows, a coped shouldered stack at the re-entrant angle to the north, a gablehead stack to the west, and a ridge stack at the centre of the south roof. The roof is covered with purple slates, and some original cans and rainwater goods remain intact.
The property is enclosed by a low saddleback coped ashlar wall and a semicircular coped rubble boundary wall, which includes corniced gatepiers.
