Description
Ardchattan is a symmetrical two-storey, three-bay villa built between approximately 1840 and 1854. The southeast elevation features a central door flanked by a pilastered ashlar doorpiece, with a slightly advanced bipartite window to the left and a canted box window to the right. All windows have cornices and are connected by a string course. The building is constructed of square and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, including a raised eaves course. It has a piended slate roof and corniced wallhead ashlar stacks with circular clay cans. The timber sash and case windows have plate glass in the lower sashes and multi-pane designs above at the front, while the rear includes an 8-pane window, including a large stair window. The entrance features a panelled timber door with a decorative fanlight. The northeast gable wall is plain, and there is a 20th-century single-storey, flat-roofed addition at the rear.
Attached to the southwest is a low, two-storey, L-plan former servants' wing with pitched and piended slate roofs, enlarged openings at the front, and doors and windows at the rear, along with a gable end stack.
Inside, notable features include a glazed vestibule with a tiled floor and an oak floor in the hall. The stair opposite the entrance has coloured glass in the stair window. There are two large principal rooms at the front, with plastered ceilings, including a decorative Adamesque design in the drawing room (southwest room).
The boundary walls consist of a tall rubble wall along Park Road with curved coping. There are tall, square-plan ashlar gatepiers with chamfered corners and pyramidal coping stones for the timber carriage and pedestrian gates. Rubble walls also enclose the garden to the northeast, southwest, and southeast.
