Description

21 Newbattle Road is a house dated 1871, featuring a single storey and attic with three bays. The south elevation is finished in stugged ashlar, while the other elevations are made of squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. The building has a base course, chamfered margins, and raised long and short quoins on the south side. The wallhead dormer windows are slate-hung.

On the south elevation facing Newbattle Road, there is a central doorpiece that is corniced and pilastered, featuring a blocking course and a raised tablet that frames a keystoned and moulded semicircular-arched doorway. The door is panelled and topped with a semicircular plate glass fanlight. Above the door, there is a panel containing a shield with the cipher "1871." To the right, there is a canted window in the bay, also with a cornice and blocking course. To the left of the centre, there is a tripartite window in an advanced panel, again with a cornice and blocking course. The outer bays have moulded segmental-arched dormer windows, with shield details at the gableheads, which feature gablet coped skews and beak skewputts, although the finials are missing.

The northeast elevation has a stair window at the centre with a small window below it, and narrow windows at ground level in the outer bays. The outer bays also feature gabled dormer windows.

On the east elevation, there is a window in an advanced panel, with additional windows on the return to the right at ground level. This side has chamfered angles, an eaves course, and a half-piend roof. The first floor has a small window to the left of centre, and there is a small piended block adjoining to the left of centre, which has a door to the north and a window to the west.

The house features sash and case windows, with a plate glass glazing pattern on the south side and 12-pane windows on the north. The stair window has coloured border glazing. The gablet-coped skews and bracketed skewputts are present, along with gablehead stacks on the east and west sides. The roof is covered in purple-grey slates, and there is a moulded eaves gutter on the south elevation.
