Description

50 North Esk Road in Montrose is a house dating from the late 19th century. It is a single-storey building with an attic and has a three-bay layout, featuring a single-storey wing at the rear that forms an L-shape. The front is finished in stugged sandstone ashlar, which is painted and rendered, while the rear is coursed and ladder-pinned. The house has a base course, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course.

The west elevation is symmetrical, with the entrance located in the center. It features a broad, recessed doorpiece with pilasters, sidelights, and a three-pane rectangular fanlight above. The outer door has four panels, and there is a part-glazed inner door. Above the entrance, there is a gabled dormer flanked by the bays, with a canted window at ground level and a canted dormer above, which has simple wrought-iron brattishing around the cill.

On the north elevation, the gable end is on the right, with a single-storey wing set back to the left. This wing has a door with a narrow rectangular fanlight and a window to the right and left. The south elevation features a gable end on the left with a window offset to the right, alongside the single-storey wing, which has a window to the left and a large window to the right.

The east elevation shows the gable end of the single-storey wing on the left, with a central gabled stair tower that has tall windows and two additional windows to the right. The house predominantly features four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roofs are pitched with grey slate, and there are stone skews and skewputts. The north and south elevations have ashlar gablehead stacks with polygonal and fluted cans, while the single-storey wing has a brick gablehead stack.

The boundary walls include a rubble wall with brick lining to the south, a brick wall to the north, a rubble wall to the east, and a coped ashlar wall fronting North Esk Road.
