Description

3 Janet Street in Thurso is an early 19th-century house that stands two storeys high and features a wide three-bay design. The front is made of tooled ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, while the flanks and rear wing are constructed from rubble. The outer bays are slightly advanced and quoined, framing a centre bay that is rusticated and has a keystoned round-headed entrance. The ground floor windows are slightly recessed, and the outer first-floor windows have narrow blind side lights. The house has a bracketed eaves cornice, a first-floor window in the southwest gable, and diminutive centre attic windows in each gable. There are also two piended dormers, three-pane glazing, and corniced end stacks, all topped with a slate roof.

To the left of the house is a single-storey, four-bay rubble wing that has outer doors, one of which is blocked, and two windows. A parapet wall conceals the roof of this wing.

Additionally, there is a stables or gighouse, also from the early 19th century, which is a two-storey rubble range facing Brabster Street. It features a near-centre door flanked by two wide slabbed entrances, three loft windows, and a small blocked pigeon flighthole in the southwest gable. The southeast garden front has two doors and two windows, and the roof is partially covered with corrugated asbestos and partially with Caithness slate.
