Description

The gatepiers at St David's High School date from the late 19th century and feature a carriage gateway flanked by pedestrian gateways. They are located at the junction of the B703, Newbattle Road, and Abbey Road. The central area includes replacement two-leaf gates, flanked by two corniced, chamfered, and panelled sandstone piers that sit on moulded bases. These piers are topped with unicorns that support heraldic shields displaying the Lothian sun motif and the initials WL, which stand for William, Marquis of Lothian. Above these, there are corniced square, panelled blocks carved with the Lothian coat of arms and the sun motif. The original pedestrian gates are flanked by chamfered and corniced outer piers, which are also topped with Lothian sun finials resting on urns with floreate bases. The structure includes snecked sandstone quadrant walls, with an ashlar base and corniced coping that ends with plain chamfered corniced piers featuring urn finials before connecting to the rubble walls of Newbattle Road and Abbey Road.
