Description

This building, located at 23 Newbattle Road in Dalkeith, dates back to 1877 and is a two-storey, two-bay villa. It features bull-faced squared and coursed masonry with ashlar dressings, deep overhanging eaves, a base course, and a band course between the floors that returns on the east elevation. The villa has stop-chamfered raised margins.

On the south elevation facing Newbattle Road, there is a bargeboarded gabled bay that is advanced to the left. This bay includes a full-height canted window with a cornice and blocking course, a garden door in the right light, and a small window in the gablehead. To the right, there is a tripartite window at the ground level and a bipartite window on the first floor.

The east elevation, which serves as the entrance, has three bays. It features a kingpost-detailed gabled porch located at the center, running north-south. The porch has a shouldered doorway to the south, with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight above. A window is raised through the eaves to the east. The fenestration is regularly arranged on the first floor and at the ground level in the outer bays. Between the left and center bays on the first floor, there is a moulded panel inscribed with the year "1877."

On the west elevation, there is a window at the ground level to the left and another to the left of center. A window is also present at the first floor to the left of center and to the right.

The north elevation features a semicircular-arched stair window at the center, with a single-storey wing attached at the ground level. The sash and case windows have a plate glass glazing pattern, and the porch and stair window have a coloured margin. The roof is covered with grey slates, featuring both a piend and a platform design. There are shouldered wallhead stacks located to the left of center on the east side and to the left and right of center on the west side. A canted dormer window is positioned above the right bay on the south and to the right on the east. The building retains its original cans and rainwater goods.

The property is complemented by pyramidal-capped banded square gatepiers with ball finials and a rubble boundary wall.
