Description

Parkend House is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay house located at 10 Dalhousie Road in Dalkeith. The house features an M-gabled block attached transversely at the rear, along with later additions, including a former smiddy. The east elevation is constructed of ashlar, while the other elevations are made of squared and snecked rubble. The building has base, eaves, and dividing band courses, with raised margins and angle margins.

On the east elevation facing Dalhousie Road, there is a painted consoled and corniced doorpiece at the center, which includes a blocking course, a flush panelled door with glazed panels, and a letterbox fanlight. The lintel is inscribed with "Parkend House." The fenestration is regular on both the ground and first floors.

The north elevation has a window on both the ground and first floors to the right, with a plaque dated "1927" above the ground floor at the center. There is a slightly recessed elevation of the transverse range to the right, featuring a window on both floors, a boarded hatch leading to a slate cold store on the left, and a lean-to porch on the right, which has a door on the left return.

The south elevation is blank, with a lean-to glass-house attached at the center.

On the west elevation, there is a window on both the ground and first floors to the right of the gable. A full-height brick addition is located to the left and center, raised from rubble and advanced to the south, with fenestration. A brick lean-to, which was the former smiddy, is attached to the west. It has rubble quoins, a window to the right facing north, a door at ground level, and a loft door above to the left, with "1901" and two flight-holes above. There is a large door flanked by windows to the west, and a window on both the ground and above to the south.

The sash and case windows feature plate glass glazing patterns, with some replacement glazing patterns in the brick range. The gablet coped skews and gablehead stacks are located on the north, south, and west sides, topped with grey slates and original cans.

A rubble wall surrounds the property, with a plaque on the north wall inscribed "Peter Davidson 1900 - 1947." There is a former stable to the north, constructed of brick with flattened gables, and a plaque dated "1947" is located to the left of the east gablehead.
