Langaller Cottage And Outbuilding Adjoining North West

Langaller Cottage and the adjoining outbuilding to the northwest is a farm building that dates from the 17th century and was converted into a dwelling in the 19th century. The structure is made of stone rubble with a plastered front and features a thatched roof with half-hipped ends. It has a brick axial stack and a stone lateral stack with a brick shaft.

The building has a plan that includes a 5-bay outbuilding associated with Langaller House, with the southeastern three bays converted into a house during the 19th century. This conversion includes a lateral stack and an outshut at the back on the southwest side.

The exterior is one storey with an attic and has an asymmetrical northwest front with two windows. There are two large late 19th-century casement windows at the center and to the right, along with a casement window in a dormer at the eaves to the left of center. A doorway to the left of center features a 20th-century door, and there is another doorway to the right. The southeast end has 20th-century windows. At the rear, there is a stone lateral stack with a brick shaft on the right within the outshut, which has a Bridgwater tile lean-to roof, a parapet on the side, and a pointed arch doorway. There is a tall doorway on the left leading to the outbuilding and a loading doorway in the gable end, both with plank doors.

Inside, two of the four jointed cruck roof trusses remain, one in the outbuilding and the other in Langaller Cottage. These trusses have cambered morticed collars, purlins, and a diagonally-set ridgepiece. The southeastern truss in Langaller Cottage has been replaced with one that crosses at the apex, and the truss between the dwelling and outbuilding may be concealed within the inserted partition wall.
