Description

The buildings at 1 and 2 Blackwalls Lane are a house, originally divided into two dwellings. It dates to the 17th century or earlier, and was remodelled and extended in the 19th century. The construction is of rendered cob and stone rubble, with a thatched roof featuring gabled ends. There are several brick chimney stacks: a rendered stack with set-offs on the front, a stone rubble gable-end stack featuring an oven, and an axial stack. The original layout was likely a three-room and cross-passage plan, with a lateral stack on the right-hand end, and a gable-end stack on the left (west) end, which appears to be an addition. In the 19th century, an outshut – in the form of a shippon – was added to the rear, and the house was divided into cottages.

The south-facing front is long, with approximately four to five windows. It features 19th-century two-light casement windows with glazing bars and slate sills. A doorway is located to the right of centre, with a 20th-century gabled porch and a projecting lateral stack to the right. At the rear, the outshut is built of stone rubble with a lean-to slate roof and boarded doors.

The interior largely reflects the 19th-century remodelling. There are 19th-century plank doors and brick partition walls in the cross-passage, along with a staircase at the back. The right-hand (east) room contains stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and a lateral fireplace with a timber lintel and oven. The centre room has roughly stop-chamfered spine beams and a large fireplace with a modern range. A jointed cruck truss is located at the right end of the roof. The rest of the roof appears to have been replaced with principals set on the wall tops with halved apexes, and purlins that are said to be threaded. The outshut at the rear includes a wooden hay-rack and a privy.
