Description
Bank Cottage is a mid-17th century cottage, substantially refurbished in the late 19th century. The walls are plastered cob on rubble footings, with the front largely rebuilt using roughly laid local rubble stone. The stack is of stone rubble topped with 19th-century brick, and the roof is thatched, with slate to a service addition. The cottage faces southwest and originally had a two-room plan, with the larger room to the southeast served by a projecting end stack. A single-storey porch and service room were added in the late 19th century to the right front corner, and a 20th-century outshot was built on the left end. The main block is two storeys with a 2-window front dating from the late 19th century, featuring casement windows with glazing bars. The ground floor windows are larger and have segmental arches. The roof is gable-ended. The front door is at the right end behind a late 19th-century extension with a slate roof. It includes late 19th-century glazed double doors to the left of a 2-light casement window with glazing bars. The main ground floor room features a 17th-century crossbeam and a rubble fireplace with an inserted or relined side oven. The soffits of the beam and the oak fireplace lintel are both chamfered with run-out stops. A winder stair to the rear left is possibly original. The roof is inaccessible. Notable late 19th-century joinery details are present, exhibiting a rustic but well-made style.
