Description

Southcott Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, featuring a stone rubble or cob stack topped with 20th-century brick, and has a thatched roof with a small part slated.

The main block faces southeast and has a two-room plan, with the larger room on the right (northeastern) side having a projecting end stack. There is a small one-room extension set back from the front right end, with its roof parallel to the main block. An outshot is located on the left end, and there is a 20th-century glass-sided conservatory at the rear. The cottage is two storeys high.

The front of the cottage is vaguely symmetrical with two windows, the first-floor windows featuring thatch eyebrows and glazing bars. The original central doorway has been blocked by a 20th-century window, although the 20th-century porch remains. The rubble outshot on the left end has a slate lean-to roof and contains a 20th-century door and porch with a gabled concrete roof. The main roof is hipped to the left and gable-ended to the right, while the roof of the right extension is also gable-ended, thatched at the front and slated at the rear. This extension has high exposed rubble footings and includes 20th-century casements and a door.

Inside, the main block features plain carpentry details. The rubble fireplace has an oak lintel with a slight soffit chamfer and run-out stops. The original roof structure is intact, characterized by an unusually high pitch supported by a series of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars.
