Description

Gardeners Cottage and the adjoining gatehouse are a house and gatehouse that possibly date from the 15th century and 18th century. They are constructed from local stone that is roughly squared with coursed ashlar dressings. The house has a plain clay tile roof, while the gatehouse features stone slates, both with simple gables. There are brick and stone chimney stacks.

The house is two storeys high and has two bays. It features 2-light casement windows, with the lower windows having leaded lights set into segmental arched openings. The upper windows have pointed arched tracery with flat heads, also leaded. Between the bays, there is a boarded door with a small glazed panel in a segmental arched opening.

The gatehouse likely stands two storeys and has one bay. It includes a central 4-centre moulded arch doorway with an old studded boarded door. Above this doorway is the upper portion of a 3-light flat-arched window without a label, featuring lights with cinquefoil traceried heads. The lower part of this window is missing and the whole is blocked, making these features not obvious re-uses.

The interior has not been seen, but the gatehouse may have connections with Ven House.
