Description
The Queens Head Public House, along with its attached stable buildings, is an inn that primarily dates from the 18th century. It is constructed from local stone squared rubble and features a hipped plain clay tile roof with stone slate base courses, along with brick and stone chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high and has a five-bay elevation facing East Street, which continues as a four-bay stable block.
The ground floor includes 12 and 16-pane sash windows, while the upper floor has 2-light small pane casements, all set in voussoired segmental arched openings. There is a wide doorway with sidelights in the second bay, which is topped by a keystoned segmental arch, and a narrower door in the fourth bay, both of which are part-glazed. On the single bay return to High Street, there is an angled bay window featuring 8+16+8 pane sashes below and 6+12+6 above, with plain wood panels in between, a wood cornice above, and a flat lead roof.
The stables extend northwards and include a large three-centre arch in the first bay with boarded gates. There are semi-circular windows in both levels of the second and fourth bays, and a larger semi-circular headed window with a doorway beneath in the third bay. Although the interior has been significantly altered, the building holds important value in the streetscape.
