Description

The Town Hall, originally a market hall, dates from the 18th century. It is constructed of Ham stone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof with coped gables and low parapets. The building is two storeys high, three bays long and one bay wide, with an early 20th-century extension that covers more than two bays on the south side. The façade includes a plinth, cornice, and pilasters that define each bay, topped with triglyph and guttae caps. The ground floor has semi-circular arches with impost moulds and keystones, while the first floor features 9-pane sash windows in architraved surrounds. The arches on the first floor are now filled with ashlar, and there is a small boarded door on the east face. The north side has semi-circular five-light windows in two upper arches, and the south side has one remaining exposed arch that is blocked with boarding and a wicket door. The east gable is adorned with a small open pedimented bell turret and an octagonal clock face. There is also an open shelter in the south angle. The extension has simpler detailing, rendered on a lias stone plinth, and a hipped Welsh slate roof. The interior has not been seen. Originally built as a market hall with open arches below, it served as a National Charity School before becoming the Town Hall.
