Description

The Guildhall, located on the south side of High Street in Milborne Port, is a shop and guildhall that dates back to at least the 17th century, with some earlier fragments. The shop section was added in the 19th century. The building is constructed from local stone coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features a Bridgwater patent interlocking clay tile roof with simple gables. It has brick chimney stacks, including a stepped stone chimney stack situated between the Guildhall and number 8.

The structure is two storeys high with a total of four bays. The first two bays, which are from the 19th century, have four-panel sash windows on the upper level, and below them is a part-glazed door set in a chamfered cambered arch. The second bay features a projecting square bay shop window beneath a clay tile lean-to. The third and fourth bays belong to the Guildhall and have cruciform casement windows, with the upper windows containing rectangular leaded panes and the lower ones featuring diamond panes. There is no window in the lower fourth bay. Between the bays, there is a doorway made from 11th-century fragments, with chevron-moulded jambs and impost blocks that support a stilted segmental arch, likely part of a wider span Norman arch formed of moulded 'T' corbels. The interior was not inspected, but as of April 1984, the lower portion of the Guildhall was being used as a store for a butcher's shop.
