Description

This milestone, located about 30 metres south-west of Clapton Mill, dates from the 19th century. It is made of Portland stone and features a cast iron plaque. The pillar measures approximately 450 millimetres wide, 110 millimetres thick, and tapers to a height of 950 millimetres with a segmental curved top. The plaque is about 380 millimetres by 135 millimetres, with semi-circles of 140 millimetres in diameter at the top and bottom, and it reads '13/LYME/CREWKERNE/3'. This milestone is part of the historic Wells to Dorchester route, which was documented by Ogilby in 1675. The road was turnpiked in 1765 by the Crewkerne Trust under their first Act, as noted by Bentley J.B. and Murless B.J. in their work on Somerset Roads.
