Description
Milestone located at the National Grid Reference ST 4201 0771. This milestone dates from the 19th century and is made of Portland stone with a cast iron plaque. The pillar measures approximately 420 millimeters wide, 110 millimeters thick, and 450 millimeters high, featuring a segmental curved top. The plaque, which also has a segmental curved top and a semi-circular drop, measures about 420 millimeters by 260 millimeters deep overall. It reads 'Crewkerne (on curve)/2/Lyme/14', a design pattern unique to the Crewkerne area. This road was part of the historic Wells to Dorchester route, as noted by Ogilby in 1675, and was turnpiked in 1765 by the Crewkerne Trust under their first Act.
