Description
Higher Woolminstone Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with some modifications. It is constructed from roughly cut and squared Ham stone, with sections in near-ashlar and ashlar dressings. The roof is thatched, featuring a half-hip on the west side and a stepped coped gable on the east, along with brick chimney stacks. The building is single-storey with attics and consists of three bays.
In the first bay, there is a 3-light ovolo-mould mullioned window set in a wave-mould recess with a label, and above it, a 3-light rectangular leaded casement window of an early pattern, which is set into the thatch and has an iron-framed opening light. The second bay contains a 3-light small-pane casement window, while the third bay features a 3-light hollow-chamfered mullioned window in a chamfered recess with a label, also rectangular-leaded. Between the first and second bays, there is a boarded door on a heavy frame, accessed by three steps, located in a recess with a timber lintel above. The transition from near-ashlar to rougher stonework occurs to the right of this doorway.
The east gable includes a small triangular-headed stairlight and a leaded casement window, while the west gable has two early pattern rectangular-leaded casements with iron-framed opening lights—one with two lights below and another with three lights above, both featuring timber lintels. There are additional mullioned windows at the rear. The interior has not been seen, but it is believed to have a cross-passage two-room plan that is possibly little altered.
