Description
Shawford Mill is a former cloth finishing mill that has been converted into a theatre. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of random rubble with ashlar quoins and a stone slate roof that is hipped to the left and has a coped verge to the right. The building has a rectangular plan and features a regular frontage with two storeys and nine bays. It includes segmental-headed two-light stone mullion windows, each with casements that have glazing bars. There are two door openings on the ground floor, which have chamfered segmental-headed stone surrounds with prominent key-stones and plank doors. A further 20th-century door opening is located on the first floor of the left return, accessed by a flight of 20th-century concrete steps.
The mill leat flows under the building in two places, emerging on the north side under a causeway, featuring one narrow and one broad segmental archway. There is a section of rubble wall on the right return with two semi-circular-headed archways made of dressed stone voussoirs. Inside the mill, there are two reused late 19th-century mill wheels. Shawford Mill is noted as an extremely well-preserved example of a local mill, and it is believed to have been used as a dye works.
